Can the police keep you detained until a dog comes and sniffs your car? Depends on the reason that you’re detained in the first place. If the cops say that they smell marijuana, they see drugs in your car, then they can certainly wait until a drug dog gets to your car to sniff that outside of it. But if you’re simply pulled over for speeding, for something like that, it depends on how long the detention is. If the detention’s a half hour for the drug dog to get there, that’s going to be deemed an illegal search. They can only detain you as long as it takes them to write you the ticket for whatever you’re pulled over for.
