There Are Worse Opioids Than Fentanyl, and One of Them Is Here in Florida
Lots of things are terrifying, but they are so far away that thinking about them is more interesting than scary. Sure, all the rivers and lakes in Florida are full of alligators, but they do not go out of their way to attack humans; if you see one in the distance, you can calmly swim to shore without it noticing you. By contrast, the saltwater crocodiles in Australia actively hunt humans. They will wait for you to get close to the water even if you spend days on land waiting for the crocodile to lose interest; you are never safe from saltwater crocodiles if you are in a coastal area of the northern half of the Australia mainland. Likewise, the size of the planet Jupiter boggles the mind; it is almost big enough to be its own star. There are other planets out there that are bigger than Jupiter, but you don’t have to worry about them; they are orbiting around other stars, far from our solar system. As drugs go, fentanyl is the one that haunts everyone’s nightmares, and rightfully so, because it causes more overdose deaths than any other drug. There are other drugs out there that are like fentanyl but stronger, and until recently, you did not have to worry about them, because they were not widespread in the illegal drug supply, but one of them has recently made an appearance in Florida. Iso Resurfaces in Florida, Two Weeks After Its Last Sighting
Iso is the common name of N-desethylisotonitazene, also known as norisotonitazene. It is one of several highly potent synthetic opioids with the word “nitazene” in their chemical names. Iso is eight times as strong as fentanyl, which means that it is 800 times as strong as morphine. In other words, iso is so strong that a microscopic amount can get you high, and a single grain of powder can kill, but unlike fentanyl, which is a ubiquitous ingredient in street corner drug powders and counterfeit pills from the dark web, you are unlikely to encounter iso in real life, or at least that was the case until recently.
Two years ago, drugs confiscated during an arrest in Riviera Beach tested positive for iso. This year, police confiscated another stash where iso was part of the drug mixture. This makes Palm Beach County, Florida the only other place in the United States besides the Philadelphia area where iso has been identified in the drug supply. If it is any consolation, no opioid is so potent that a big enough dose of naloxone cannot reverse the effects of overdose if administered in time. If iso is coming soon to Central Florida, have your Narcan ready.
